Gave away nine but none are mine

7/18/09                             Grizzlies vs Sky Sox Game 3

Krista and I don’t get to Colorado Springs nearly enough so it doesn’t take a whole lot to convince us to take the 2 1/2 hour drive. The reason for today’s trek south was the the used car giveaway at Security Service Field where the Colorado Springs Sky Sox call home.

IMG_0432.JPG  Names are randomly drawn at the end of each inning and there were nine cars in all.

I noticed a Jeep Cherokee, a Mercedes, an older Nissan 280 Z which was in nice shape and some other “Repos” not worth mentioning but worth keeping if you happen to win one of them.

We showed up early enough for batting practice but you’re not allowed inside the stadum until one hour before the game starts. So snagging baseballs consists of standing outside the stadium in the outfield and trying to snag them as they fly over the fence.

It’s harder than it sounds because although you can hear the crack of a ball being hit you don’t know where the hell the ball is going to land. If you want to catch a ball you have to stand within twenty feet of the outfield wall.

While doing so you can only see directly above you and you wind up standing there playing the odds. If by chance a ball does clear the fence right where you’re standing you only have a fraction of a second to react.

Possible, but probably not going to happen today. Besides, I was saving my luck for the cars.

I opted to stand back about a hundred feet so I could see in advance when a ball was going clear the fence and so I could have some space to react to the ball’s bounce. It worked, I managed to snag one of maybe five baseballs I saw just sneak over the outfield wall.

I later took my Pacific Coast League baseball up to Sox the Fox and asked him to autograph it for me.

The line to get inside Security Service Field was at least two-hundred people deep when we walked up to the gate. I couldn’t believe it. As we went through the gates we were given a piece of paper to fill out with our personal information.

The personal information was for the used car drawing or so they told us (I hate junk mail).

Krista and I filled out our entries, turned them in and headed off the grass berm to snag a spot and unload our stuff so I could head over to try and get my Big Stick bat signed.

Krista on the Berm 7-18-09.JPG I slid into a good spot within fifteen feet of the Sky Sox dugout and waited. The first person on the field to warm-up was my favorite Sky Sox player Sal Fasano.

Sal Fasano 7-19-09.JPGI guess the Sky Sox loosened up on their “No facial hair” policy because Sal was sporting his tradmark “Stache”.Sal catching 7-18-09.JPG

Of all the autographs I was able to get today I did not get Sal’s.

Next person out to warm-up was Eric Young Jr. He’s always attentive to his fans and signs for everyone.

He was the first autograph on my bat today.

I congratulated EY Jr. on making the Futures team.

David Ortmeier 7-18-09.JPG

Next to sign was David Ortmeier.

If you remember I caught David’s first home run ball as a Rockie during spring training this year.

David hasn’t really said much the few times I’ve been around him. He’s signed when I’ve asked, but he seems uncomfortable doing it.

I could be wrong, in any case David is a helluva first baseman and I appreciate that he took the time to sign for me.

Chris Frey was happy to sign for the group and added his mark to my bat.

Here are the rest of the Sky Sox who signed the “Big Stick”.

RPR and EY jr Hummer1.jpgI love Colorado Springs. I’ve spent a lot of my years here and I always enjoyed this special city. A good chunk of my friends still habitate there. Security Service Field is a great place to watch a baseball game and you never know who you might see play.

Next year for my birthday I want to rent the Sky Sox hot tub. I’ll be holding interviews for the seven other ladies that get to join me in the tub. What, you don’t think I’m going to soak in there with a bunch of dudes do you?

Remember ladies…less is more…I’m kidding, seriously I am ūüôā

One of my goals in life it to catch a ball while soaking my bones in that hot tub. There’s probably as much chance of that happening as me taking batting practice with the Rockies.

Aim_High.jpgBut just like a sign above a urnial that I once saw while taking a leak on the Air Force Academy, you’ve got to “Aim High”.

The Rockies are back in Denver playing the D-Backs tomorrow. I’ll be at the game on Tuesday and look for me on TV during the Wednesday afternoon game. I’ll be in the outfield with Hunter and my friend from work who hooked Hunter up with the prize package to meet Carmelo Anthony earlier this year.

Just as I was about to publish this entry the rain stopped and a rainbow appeared off the front deck.

Could it be…The Ranter on TV?

After it all happened I figured I might be on TV. Props to Robert for snaggin Spilborgh’s home run ball in the third inning. Spilborghs is his favorite Rockies player.

Robert was sporting Spilly’s Jersey and immediatly after he snagged that home run ball Spilly’s dad called Robert on his cell phone.

Don’t believe me,… look how happy this old man is.

Robert on phone with Spilly's dad4-26-09.jpg

Robert asked me later how close I was to him when he snagged that ball and I told him if he had stopped any shorter we’d have known each other too well.

Good job Robert, the dude is quick. Next time I’ll sit on the other side of him.

Click on the link below and check out the video of it all:

I  know I didn’t get the ball but at least I didn’t look like a chump my first time on TV ūüôāMe first in line 4-26-09.jpg

Today I was the first in line at the Rockpile gate and things were as they should be in Rockie land.

First in line at the gate puts me first into the Pavilion.

Empty Pavilion.JPG When the batting cages are out it gives me an extra few minutes before the place starts to crawl with people.

As you can tell from this picture, first didn’t mean much today.

Here is a shot of Dan and Robert politely discussing one of yesterday’s batting practice snags ūüôā

Dan and Robert 4-26-09.JPG      Something about somebody stepping on somebody’s foot if I remember correctly? ūüôā

I was lucky again today and Dan hooked me up with a Row 1 ticket. This enabled me to go onto the field during the autograph session. I’ve never done this before and let me tell you it was beyond cool.

Check out the video of me entering the field:

I love this picture of the field this is from the roped off dirt area we were in behind home plate.

RPR on Coors Field -1.jpg                                       I managed to get four autographs today.

On the left is Jason Hammel and on the right is Ryan Speier.

Manny Corpas came out and signed for a few people then split.

Ubaldo Jimenez also came out and signed for the whole group.

I skipped Ubaldo because I have him already. I was able to give him a knuckle bump and wish him good luck this year. Nice guy.

The other two autographs I snagged were Franklin Morales and Jason Grilli.

Looks like Jason will get his first start for the Rockies on Monday’s game against the Padres.

                  Good luck Jason!

In the video below Robert and I were almost to the Pavilion when I heard someone call out “Rockpile Ranter”. That someone was Missy from “View from the Rockpile”.

Missy is an Usher at Coors Field and was on her way to Gate E when we ran into her. This was the first time her and I have met and it was really cool to finally run into her at a game.

I especially love beating the Dodgers.

Days like today are special. How often does a person get to go underneath Coors Field, then stand on the field and get autographs? I’m glad I could share some of it with you.

I’ll be at Coors tomorrow for batting practice (weather permitting).

Who knows what whill happen? Stay tuned…D

Despite the Shock it’s Time to Rock

                            Play Ball
tucson sky.jpgIf you’ve been following this blog you know, I’m already in Tucson. I’ve been there for two weeks now (in my mind). Nothing can stop this trip.
The best part is the guys that I’m going with are as excited as I am.
rspeier1121.jpgRyan Speier accepted me as a friend on Facebook today. Ryan was my third Rockies autograph ever and he signed for me on autograph day last spring training.
Ryan gave Zack Hample his glove a few years back and I remember Zack mentioning in his blog that the glove was this most prized gift from a player.
I want all the Rockies pitchers to have a good season but I’m really pulling for Speier and toe_dipping.jpgMorales.
Both of these guys have dipped their toes in the big league and I’d like to see both of them “take the plunge” so to speak.
Here’s a new segment I’m going to call “Ranters question of the day”.
Todays question…I guess I’m what you could call a collecter. What do you collect? What is your most prized posession and would you ever sell it?Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image

Rockies have spoken and my streak is broken

me 6-17-08.jpg

I arrived thirty five minutes before batting practice started and I’m the first one in line at the gate.

     SWEET !

Bleachers 6-17.JPG

There is a peaceful feeling you get when your the first one into an empty Stadium.

The first thing you notice is how quiet it is. You can actually hear the players talking.

My senses came alive as I was the first one into the Pavilion. Ryan Speier 1-17.JPG

I ran down to the field while nobody was around and snapped this picture of Ryan Speier.

After I took this picture I looked to my right and saw Zack Hample all ready rolling. Zack 6-17.JPG

I had two balls hit into the bleachers where I was lurking.

The first ball I was racing against another guy to get it,  and when it took a bounce it landed in the Row one where Zack was snaggin.

He ran over and  and scooped it up.

Zack 6-17-2.JPG

Ball # 2  had only me chasing after it.

The ball hit the bleachers and took a hearty bounce right over to where Zack was and he gloved it perfectly.

I had a few more close calls..but had to leave Coors field empty handed with my streak broken. zack 6-17-3.JPG

My only two chances today snagged by the Baseball Collector.

I’m ok with that ..

Good Job Zack.

Nice to see you in action.

What happened in the tunnel??

Better Seats 6-17.JPG

I improved my distant  seats and enjoyed most of the game from right here.

 No foul ball action whatsoever.

But I snapped a few cool pictures as you can see below. TH6-17-2.JPG Reynolds 6-17.JPG TH6-17.JPG

HD 6-17.JPGThis was a great game. Reynolds allowed only one run in five innings. Baker hits a two run inside the park homer..WOW.Hawpe joined the fun and he also hit a two run homer.

A total of seventeen hits this game..that’s the most this year. Rockies scalp the Indians tonight 10-2.

I’ll take a win over a batting practice ball anyday…Rumor has it Tulo will be back on Friday…I’ll be back Thursday…

Jeff Francis is the starting pitcher for Wednesday’s game..

Good Luck Jeff, lets go for two in a row.

Out of the Storm..The Ranter is Born

March 25, 2008

Hi, my name is¬†Don and I go by “D”. I’ve been a Rockies fan since 1993 and up until now attend about 4 or 5 games a year.

I plan to increase that substancially, funds and time permitting.wslogo1.jpg

I started this blog because I felt there was a serious lack of recognition and respect for the Rockies and their incredible World Series run last year.

That pissed me off. Something needed to be done.

I figured blogging would the best way that I could bring attention to the Rockies and their great fan base. I’ll do that by¬†taking a lot of pictures and detailing different aspects of the games I attend in my own special way.

Believe me folks, I’m not like other bloggers. I ¬†have no set ¬†boundaries. Blogging is uncharted territory and I plan to make a path for myself.

I’m not the guy who’s gonna overwhelm you with stats. I’m all about detailing¬†the baseball experience.¬†Nobody’s paying me to blog¬†here so you can bet I’ll always give it to you straight.

So in order start this MLBLog off right I attended my first Rockies spring training in Tucson this year. I went down there to support the Rockies and see what all the fuss was about.

It was a short three day trip and I went by myself because the group of guys I was heading down to Tucson with all backed out for one reason or another.

HI C 1.jpgI spent two days wandering around Hi-Corbett talking to Ushers and minor league players. I was trying to learn all that I could so next spring training I would know exactly how the system works.

Here’s a shot of Franklin Morales in the practice fields behind the stadium.

IMG_0007.JPGI attended two games while in Tucson both Rockies home games.

I love it down here.¬†Baseball is in the air and¬†that¬†air is nice and warm. It’s a nice break from the Colorado cold.

Today I was shooting some video of Matt Holliday when he hit a foul ball off of the first base line and I had no idea that it was headed right for me.

The ball missed me by a few feet.

¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† What’s worse is I totally missed snagg’n that ball….Not a good start.

My very first autograph ever was Omar Quintanilla in 2006. Today was Autograph day at Hi Corbett field and I was able to get Ryan Speier and Micah Bowie to autograph my baseball.
                                                               Nice guys

¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† I can’t wait to come back here next year, I’ll be much¬†better prepared.

Thanks for stopping by the Rant and reading my first entry.
