Yankees vs Rockies Game 1
Weather: 64 degrees, cloudy.
Wind: 9 mph, In from RF.
T: 2:47.
Attendance: 41,595
Rain…Lots of rain.
I didn’t feel like I had great pictures for this game so I was going to skip this particular blog entry. However this was a Rockies win, the only one of the series and the only one in a while. Plus how often are the Skankees in town?
Although I was shut-out for BP again…. I felt like BP was as it should be. Baseballs flying everywhere and folks I know catch’n ’em. I was witness to the Rox Addict snagg’n his first two of the season while surrounded by Yankee fans gloves.
Best thing about BP is it wasn’t raining…Yet.
I watched Jersey Geoff spring into action and snag Mariano Rivera’s autograph while in left field.
I was also witness to the end result of an overly eager ball hawk that decided it was a good idea to crowd Jersey Geoff. A BP ground rule double bounced off the warning track then off of a glove and tagged that eager ball hawk right in the eye. (He’s OK).
Folks, that’s how you keep an eye out for the ball 🙂
With Joe Girardi (Skankees Manager and the Rockies first catcher) in town it was time for a group pic. Four old Rockies pretty much the same age as me. Prize for best hair hands down goes to Vinny Castilla.
Think these fellas have a few stories to tell?
I hung out with the Rox Addict most of this game, sitting just under the second level along the first baseline taking pictures and trying keep my camera dry.
It started raining early on and never stopped. Here’s my buddy “Big B” and his lady center picture toughing it out in the pavilion.
Remember this guy? Chris Nelson a Yankee!…Oh well at least he’ll get to play there.
Anyone else think Ichiro’s eyebrows look tattooed on? This dude is still one helluva player despite the botched make-up.
Quote from Walt Weiss about Jorge: “Jorge gave up three singles — that’s a big-time performance,” Weiss said. “It’s nice to see one of our starters go out there and pitch like he did. If we get good starting pitching like we have for the most part this year, we’re going to win games.”
LOL
As per usual, weather became an issue.
Cargo blasts a homer to center field and scores Rutledge…2-0 Rockies.
Quote from Cargo: “I won’t lie — I was a little angry the whole game,” Gonzalez said. “We’ve been playing in a lot of bad weather, in a lot of bad situations, but we’ve still got to go out there and do our best.”
Well played Cargo!
I’m “D” the Ranter and give a lil props to the Rockies as this was their first shutout win at Coors Field since a 6-0 victory over the Cubs last Sept. 26.
I’ll be sitting front row of the pavilion May 16-18 for the Giants series here at Coors Field with my only goal being catching a game homer. See you there…”D”

Opening Day at Coors Field.
Let’s just say it’s been a long winter and if you live in Colorado, …it ain’t over yet.
Colorado does Opening Day right. Right in the fact that you don’t need a ticket to the game to enjoy the festivities, just show up early ready to party. The weather was 70 degrees and perfect for April baseball.
The day started out with Douglas’s breakfast at the 20th St Cafe as it has for the last few Opening Days. In attendance were, Jersey Geoff, Mike the Rox Addict…
Fran and Robert.
Our host Douglas, Hunter and yours truly. On an extremely cool note, I only eat at the 20th St. Cafe once or twice a year and the waitress remembered what my breakfast order was.
That’s impressive!
Once we were full it was time to wander. Although there were a lot of folks hang’n around Coors Field, this OD seemed a bit mellower than ones I’ve attended in the past. Still there was lots going on.
Hunter and I stopped by and checked out my favorite local Artist Kyle Banister. Kyle had a primo spot for his art and was working on the Rockies 20th Anniversary logo in liquid chalk. 🙂
Here’s Kyle Banister, Laura Rector, Eric Matelski working hard.
Here it is finished… WOW!!
Kyle’s work always pops out at you. His link is on my sidebar.
Stilt Man out harassing some lady trying to read a book?
Hunter and I met up with long time Rockies employee and Rant follower Missy. 15 years with the Rockies right Missy?
As we walked by the 850 KOA booth I noticed Goose Gossage and David Nied getting interviewed by Mike Rosin.
I have Goose’s autograph already but I was carrying a poster I wanted the “Nied for Speed” David Nied to sign. We waited around for a bit, but I figured I’d have better luck inside on Sunday acquiring Nied’s autograph.
Batting practice was taking place and as Hunter and I entered the pavilion a hit baseball had just rolled up to the wall. Matt Belisle picked it up, looked up and saw Hunter standing there and tossed it to him. Within a minute of entering the stadium Hunter had the first BP ball of the regular season.
Hunter managed to snag one more and his old man came up empty for Opening Day.
Before BP ended I met up with my a friend and co-worker Kevin and his daughter Sam. This was their first Opening day at Coors and you could tell they were happy to be there just soaking everything in.
Seemed like there were fewer balloons this year?
Ceremonial first pitch.
Gonna be a fun season seeing these guys around, it feels like old times.
I like the fact that Dante has the boys hitt’n good so far.
Props to Cargo for staying healthy last year…Another Gold Glove!
Damn that thing is shiny!
This set of conjoined twins is known as the Hellowitzki.
First pitch of the game.
Cargo showing you why he got the shiny glove.
WTF?
Look far left in the front row you can see Jersey Geoff in the mix.
This Canadian earned his bacon today.
Dex seconds before a home run blast to right field.
Dex’s home run ball just before it lands.
Dex gett’n some luv from the dugout. You can see John Elway and Dick Monfort above the dugout.
Wait a minute, the entire stadium is celebrating Dex’s home run and Elway is Texting?
Sorry John..I’m a huge fan but today you are the:
“Dude texting with TV seats” fan of the game.
Props to your girl though, she knows what time it is 🙂
Watch your back “Baby Bull”!
Rockies beat the Padres in their Home Opener…5-2
Folks that’s three in row. The best the Rockies did last season was three in a row.
I’m extremely impressed with the Rockies pitching and hitting so far.
This team is loaded with talent, the question is: Is this the year we stay healthy and a new set of “Blake Street Bad-Asses” is born?
I’m “D” the Bad Ass Ranter….We need some attitude to go along with this altitude.
Phillies Pay on Daddy/Daughter Day

Phillies vs Rockies Game 1
Game On…Hope you had a nice break.
I’ve have a lot of friends who are Phillies fans. There’s Phillie Jim, my buddy Rick, and an old buddy Kevin who back in the day made the ultimate sacrifice and said FU to a job that wouldn’t let him attend a Phillies/Rockies game in 2007. All these dudes are hardcore Phillies fans and with the Rant being a fan blog I respect that.
With that said, unfortunately once a year our Coors Field turns partially red and is bustling with over-anxious Phillie fans full of east coast pride, who are trying to make up for the 80 other home games they’ll miss.
No Worries..It was Daddy/Daughter day for me.
Mylee’s great because she has her mom’s fantastic sense of humor and her dad’s ability to point out people who need pointing out. Batting practice was a bust today. The Rockies were out on the field but decided a half hour was too much time to hang with the fans so they bailed early.
(Year of the Fan, the rally towel they gave away today said so).
I found out from Hawaii Bob that the Phillies had taken BP around 3pm and were finishing up inside. I can’t tell you how much that pleased the mass of Phillies fans who took the time to show up early to see their team warm-up. I was a little bummed as well because Ryan Howard was back in the lineup and I had my sights on a Howard BP homer.
BP was so boring I was wishing I had brought my full size Tulo banner so we could have played a round of “Pin the Injury” on the Duece. Yep Rockies poster boy Tulo is taking a well deserved bumpy ride on the old Karma Wagon of life.
I hope Tulo figures out that when you “RESPECT” your fans and their time, the shocks on the Karma Wagon kick in and the ride suddenly smooths out.
But what do i know 🙂
The highlight of BP was seeing Amy the Blake Street Babe straight-up catch her second BP homer of the season. She did it sandwiched between two seasoned ballhawks who were waiting for her to blow it so they could swarm in and snap up her leftovers…Nice Job Amy!
One of Many… Ranter’s “Year of the Fan” Ideas
Players/fans playing catch…Randomly pick a few fans to go out onto the field during BP and play catch. The players have to warm up and does it really make a difference who tosses him the ball? Any baseball fan would remember walking on Coors Field and throwing a catch with a MLB player his/her entire life.
Check this out Rockies Promotional Folks…Throwing a catch costs you nothing…As I said the players are warming-up anyway and you pay them right? Make this an every home-game thing and get folks excited about showing up early for BP.
FYI Rockies..I’m available for consulting and I’m full of GOOD ideas.
Game Pictures
He’s back!
Cargo sport’n Tulo’s #2 wristband? Upside down it sort of looks like a 5.
Strike three Cliff Lee.
Friedrich did a great job pitching 6 solid innings. Christian had 7 strikeouts officially punking Cliff Lee…today.
Is Ryan gett’n bigger?
Colvin is a beast.
Straight from Tulsa…Josh Rutledge miliseconds before his first MLB hit.
They called Josh up from the AA Tulsa Drillers because Todd Helton went on the DL list Friday with right hip soreness.(Gett’n old sucks).
Heal up quick TH!
Josh’s first hit.
Josh’s first safe slide into second.
I already like Josh, in an imperfect world, that’s the perfect way to start a MLB career. Josh went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI and a stolen base.
I’m gonna say it now…Get what you can for the Duece while you can. Tulo will eventually self-destruct as he is his own worst enemy…Mentally and Physically.
In a quick 2:37 minutes the Rockies send the fans home happy with a 6-2 win over the Phillies in front of 33,346.
I’m “D” the Ranter…I got nothing…”D”
Older Than Me…Still Making History

Diamondbacks vs Rockies Game 1
Rockies were tired and skipped batting practice today, the D-Backs were not. I managed to snag a ground rule double during BP off of Justin Upton. Normally those are difficult to grab ahold of when they bounce, but this one hit the wall, bounced off my arm and landed right by my feet…Sweet!
This is my portable “Bring Back Helmer” sign. No good TV oportunities to use it today.
For this game I was sitting front row in the pavilion so I didn’t take nearly as many pictures as I normally do. Today I was hoping for a chance to snag a live game home run ball.
As is always the case…It didn’t happen 😦
When Jamie’s runn’n the show you know something cool is gonna transpire. Jamie gets his first RBI’s since June of 2004 and is now the oldest pitcher in MLB with an RBI.
Meet the Rockies new mascot “The Rally Squirrel”.
I’m calling him Dante cause of his puffy cheeks.
Rockies strike first and get a much-needed win with a final score of …6-1
Quote from Jamie post-game:
“Making quality pitches is the important thing for me,” Moyer said. “Tonight, I did a better job of it, but there’s still room for improvement.”
I”m “D” The Ranter and I’m becoming a huge Jamie Moyer fan.
A TeePee and a Sore Knee
Mets vs Rockies
Weather: 71 degrees, cloudy.
Wind: 9 mph, Out to CF.
T: 2:35 (:50 delay) for rain and hail
Att: 31,007.
Back at Coors after a not so great road trip.
The sky was ugly but it was warm. I’ll take warm anytime. Batting practice was better than usual for me today and I snagged three ground rule doubles. The first one I’m pretty sure was from Chris Iannetta and as it bounced into the first row I barehanded it.
The second bounced over Robert and Geoff”s head and I had a better spot in the tunnel which put me there first.
The third was a really nice catch off the bounce. All three were given away.
Today I discovered a “Purple Margarita”
It’s not often I drink something purple but I’ll admit it was pretty good.
Rockies were down two nothing in the second until “The Duece let loose with the juice”
Tulo hits a beauty off of Pelfrey. The Right field crowd realizing the baseball is headed their way.
If you look closely in-between the railing you can see Tulo’s homer.
Then the mad scramble for it.
All you can see here is a hand with a watch holding a ball.
In reality the dude with the black shirt and black hat snagged the ball and his little girl is holding it.
Not long after Seth Smith does the same thing.
You can see Smith’s homerun ball top of the picture in the middle.
All I can say is if that was my wiener I’d be treating it a little better…Can you say condiments?
But totally bobbles the second one…They boo-ed him…LOL
The Coors Field “Crack of the Game”.
-CCCCCHHHHHH
Not to be outdone Cargo gets his first homerun at Coors this year in the sixth inning.
You can see Cargo’s homerun just above the yellow line on the right side. On the left side of this picture you can see Douglas cheering.
In the seventh inning with Dexter Fowler at bat the game gets delayed for rain and depending on where you were sitting…hail.
Out comes the tarp. Notice there are eight guys in the picture.
Here’s the dude just before he gets completely covered.
The groundkeeper stuck here under the tarp looks like a Teepee. Guys remind you of anything in the morning?
Here he is making his exit to a cheering crowd.
After fifty minutes they removed the sand bags, folded up the tarp and Dexter Fowler was back up to bat.
Dexter fouled one off his knee and goes down quick.
Dexter exited the game and Ryan Spilborghs took his spot.
Here are some random pics.
Jon Herrera daring someone to cross this line.
I call this set of pictures:
“Hawaii Bob doin his Job”
“Excuse me sir may I see your tickets?”
“Sir these are Rockpile tickets. You’re sitting in the wrong section”
Hawaii Bob gives them the boot and sends them on their way with a smile.
Ian Stewart broken bat series.
Cheers to you Jersey Geoff.
Best jacket of the game 🙂 Mets take this one 4-3. I hate losing to the Mets at home.
Mike…The Rox Addict standing tall in the Homeboy Hangout.
Mark, Tracy and Tom Post Game.
Other than Mike, Robert and I, these were really the only other Rockies fans hanging out after this loss.
That got us a little TV time. Thank you Joy for sending me this.
The first time I’ve ever heard the words Rockpile Ranter uttered on Television and it’s followed by the Cowboy saying I’ve got fleas and Tom saying I’ve got ants in my pants.
No worries, you get what you get when you’re a white boy and you shake your groove thing on TV.
You can expect a different dance now every time the Rockies lose and Mike and I are there postgame
Cheer on your Rockies, believe me you don’t wanna see us dance.
I’m “D” The Rockpile Ranter and this is the purple mohawk dude.
We both agree, it’s time for the Rockies to get a grip and stop this slip….D
Minus the snow…We’ll give it another go.
Happy New Year Rantics!
The Tom Helmer of FSN Rocky Mountain interview/Rantic get together is back on. It will be held at Champps at 8325 Park Meadows Center Drive in Littleton at 5-6pm on Saturday January 8th.
It’s on the weekend this time and the weather will be decent so hopefully those of you who couldn’t make it before will be able to attend.
Remember folks this is all non-formal. Tom’s interview might take ten minutes and the rest of the time you can ask Tom questions, have a drink, eat some dinner if you want (I am), or just hang out and drink a hot chocolate.
Krista and I will be there, I really hope to see you there.
Rockies News
I gotta say I’m glad the Rockies were able to sign Carlos Gonzalez. I know it’s a lot of money, but seven years for 80 million is a bargain for Cargo. I figure Cargo took this deal is because he’s happy here and he’s extremely well liked by the Rockies fans.
A total win/win situation for the Rockies.
From everything I’ve witnessed this season Cargo is well on his way to becoming a superstar and it’s nice to know he’ll call Colorado home for the next seven years.
So we’ve got Cargo and Tulo to build a team around. That my friends is a great start 🙂
I also read that former Rockie Brad Hawpe is soon to be a Padre.
That ought to make Queen Geri happy as she’ll at least get to see him several times a season.
I’m “D” The Rockpile Ranter and it’s gonna be a good year.
